Our mare, Bayywatch comes from the Valley View Ranch, in Gainesville, Texas - in the heart of cutting horse country. If you are old enough to know the Baywatch TV show, you will remember Pamela Anderson, the Canadian that played the lifeguard - a young and very attractive, athletic woman.
Our Pam is also young, (just 5), attractive (gorgeous actually) and super athletic! The barn name for Bayywatch is appropriately, Pam. She'll be headed to Canada before long, bringing the metaphor full-circle.
Pamela Anderson on Baywatch
In November of 2021, Jacob Taurel was headed to the Metallic Cat Cutting Futurity when his mount was kicked at pasture and became unsound to ride. His father, David, 2017 Co-Champion of the NCHA Amateur Futurity (on Playboy is Smooth), offerred his mare, Bayywatch, to ride to the prestigious event. Jacob and Pam didn't know each other very well but they became a real team during the competition. At the end of the day, the pair won the Unlimited Amateur class with a score of 222.
David and Jacob talk about how much Pam matured as a show horse during the event, from the first run to the final round. One thing's for sure - she's a champion! Watch their run in the video clip below.
Pam won $30,000 in her first year of cutting competition, at a single show. Her next year, as a 4 year old, she added $12,000 to her account, from 5 shows. She has been in ongoing traning, and is a powerhouse of a mare.
Bayywatch is a 2018, Bay mare by the amazing, $2 Million sire, Thomas E Hughes (High Brow Cat x Smart Letha) and out of FMR Double The Pepto (Peptoboonsmal x Badger San Doc).
Thomas E Hughes was a 2003 colt by High Brow Cat and out of Smart Letha (Smart Little Lena x Alethalena (Freckles Playboy x Lenaette)). During his career in the NCHA, from 2006 to 2012, he accumulated $394,708 in earnings. He earned $10,000 as a 3 year old; his first win with Sam Shepard at the 2006 NCHA Cutting Futurity. Through a number of shows with a variety of riders, he earned over $64,000 in 2008 and became Austin Shepard's main mount. In 2009 the pair brought in almost $145,000. Watch their final run in the video link.
The dam of Bayywatch, FMR Double The Pepto (Peptoboonsmal x Badger San Doc) had limited showing and earnings. As a broodmare however, 9 of her offspring earned a cumulative $183,000, to average over $20,000 each in events from cutting to ranch versatility to reined cow horse. Bayywatch is the top earning sibling at $42,000 to date. You may recognize some of her siblings; Double Ur Bets ($35,000), Thomas E Treble ($32,000), Rollin Bamacat ($20,000), Reyzin The Bets, Pepto Hughes, Double Bama Gamma, Double The CD and Gambling Game.
The pedigree of Bayywatch reads like a "Who's Who?" of AQHA Champions, with signficant influence from Doc Bar, Doc Olena, Smart Little Lena and Peppy San Badger. There are very few names on her papers that are not easily recognized.
We met Pam while visiting David Taurel and attending the Metallic Cat Cutting Horse Futurity in Forth Worth in November, 2022 at the urging of Dan Alliban. What a great time we had in Texas! A trip filled with good friends, great horses, and tasty Texas meals; it's a visit we'll never forget! Watching Lindy Thorn's win in the Professional Futurity was such a highlight.
Riding a mare of Pam's calibre is rather intimidating for a novice cutting amateur. She's quick, honest and correct in every turn. And she's a fairly good sized mare - not a fine little 'cutter' type at all. To my surprise, the event seems to slow down aboard Bayywatch, her smooth movement keeps the riding much easier than I had imagined! Of course, she is a very proficient cutter and can do the job all on her own - I really just need to stay out of the way!
You'll be hearing more about Pam and hopefully you'll get a chance to see her in action, this summer in Alberta. We'll be giving her the royal treatment - it's what she's used to and what she deserves! Stay tuned for Pam's continued career.

Purdy Bossy
BOSS
Purdy Bossy is a young futurity hopeful, at home in Alberta. He's currently training with Dale Clearwater of Just About A Ranch and showing his heritage already.
This 3 year old stallion is by CD Lights and out of Purdy Metallica. He was raised by Dr. Dan Watkins, DVM. and remains a favourite of Watkins' colts. We had decided to call him "Boss" at the barn before discovering that his sire had that same barn name. Let's hope he inherits more from his sire than his call name.
CD Lights became a million dollar sire in 2017, earning $234,000 in five seasons of NCHA competition. He was a finalist at the NCHA Futurity Open in 2002 and in the NCHA Derby Open in 2003. In 2006 he was awarded NCHA World Champion Stallion, the 2006 World Finals Open Champion and NCHA Open Reserve Champion, after which he was retired. He has numerous successful offspring in both NCHA and NRCHA whose earnings exceed $5,7 million.
His dam, Purdy Metallica, suffered a broken shoulder from a kick at pasture as a weanling. She was taken in by Dr. Watkins and nursed back to health but she was never sound to ride. This mare was able to breed and carry to term. She has produced 3 foals to date, with Purdy Bossy being the first of them.
Purdy Metallica is by the NRCHA's first ever $5 million dollar sire, Metallic Cat. His top offspring include Call Me Mitch, Metallic Train, Cats Picasso, Ricato Suave, Hazardouz Material and MoonshineAndTwoAdvil, all of which have erned over $100,000 in the NRCHA. Purdy Metallica is out of Purdy Bet,
With such a strong pedigree, we are keen to start working with Purdy Bossy ourselves. We hope you'll see him in the show ring later this year!
Ginger
We found Miss Hashtags in Weatherford, Tx. and managed to get her home to the ranch in June. She was nicely started and her movement looked great but she was a bit behind for her age. We loved her bloodlines with Hashtags (Metallic Cat x Dual Rey Tag) and KRK Playing It Smart (Playgun [Freckles Playboy x Miss Silver Pistol] x Smart Lil Chiquita [Smart Little Lena x Miss Chiquita Tari])
Hashtags is a blue roan stallion with earnings over $480,000 in cutting. At the age of 3, he placed in the top 10 of the NCHA Open Futurity. At 4, he won the NCHA Open Super Stakes Futurity and was the top 4 year old money earner in all divisions. At the age of 5, he won the NCHA Open World Champion. His offspring are eligible for BVSS Super Stal lion In cen tive, Breeders In vi ta tional, NCHA Super Stakes, PCCHA Stakes, NRCHA Stal lion Stakes, Ri ata Buckle, Royal Crown Roping and Gold Buckle Fu tu rities
Playgun was a grey stallion with over $183,000 in earnings. At 3 he was a finalist in the NCHA Open Futurity. The following year, at 4, he was Augusta 4-Year-Old Open and Non-Pro Futurities’ Champion, Steamboat Springs Open Derby Champion, El Cid Open Derby Reserve Champion, Bonanza Non-Pro Derby Champion, money-earner
in the Open; 7th in the NCHA Open Derby, top 10 Non-Pro; split 3rd Abilene Spectacular Open Derby; 7th Memphis 4-Year-Old Open Futurity and the Abilene Western Non-Pro Derby Reserve Champion
We are keen to start working with Miss Smarthash ourselves and see what she brings to the arena. Hopefully you'll see her in the show ring later this year!
